Gardens shaped by ecology, season, and time

Organic garden design and consultancy rooted in observation, restraint and long-term tending.

Every garden is an unfolding conversation between time, place and care.

About

Gardens are living places shaped slowly by season, care and attention.

My work is rooted in an organic approach to gardening - one that listens closely to landscape, honours biodiversity and allows beauty to emerge over time rather than be imposed all at once.

I have worked at every level within horticulture, including serving as Head Gardener in nationally important gardens open to the public and contributing to the restoration of historically significant landscapes. Alongside practical gardening, I support clients through design, long-term planning, recruitment of skilled staff and the careful evolution of their outdoor spaces.

Training at Great Dixter, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Merrist Wood shaped a lifelong commitment to plants, ecology and the quiet craft of gardening. Today, my work brings together practical knowledge, artistic sensitivity and an understanding of how landscapes deepen in beauty with time and thoughtful stewardship.

Each garden becomes a conversation between place, people and season.

My approach to planting is musical rather than architectural

Rhythms within rhythms, balance held in motion,
and space allowed to speak as clearly as form.

If this way of gardening resonates, I would be glad to begin a conversation.

From first idea to long-term stewardship.

Garden Design

Thoughtful, site-responsive design shaped by ecology, seasonality and a deep understanding of place.

Garden Restoration

Naturalistic, biodiverse planting that matures beautifully over time, renewing existing gardens with care.

Consultancy and Stewardship

Long-term guidance supporting the careful management and evolution of outdoor spaces

Garden Design

Each project begins with close observation - of landform, light, soil and the subtle atmosphere of place.

Design then brings structure and rhythm: shaping space, guiding movement and composing plant communities woven into a living composition that matures with time, creating gardens that feel calm, coherent and deeply rooted in their setting.

Every garden begins with attention, and unfolds through careful, considered process

The Design Process

1. Understanding place
Careful observation of landform, soil, light and the rhythms already present.

2. Shaping the structure
Paths, spaces and boundaries arranged to create clarity, balance and flow.

3. Planting as composition
Layered plant communities woven into a living composition that matures through time.

4. Stewardship and evolution
Guidance that allows the garden to settle, deepen and grow more beautiful each season.

Garden Restoration

Gardening is an act of patience.

It asks us to listen first - to soil, light, history and place - and only then to begin.

My work centres on restoring balance and vitality to gardens through thoughtful, ecologically grounded planting.

From the quiet renewal of tired borders to the re-imagining of entire landscapes, each project is guided by long-term stewardship, seasonal beauty and a deep respect for the living systems that sustain a garden over time.

Garden Restoration Process

  • Soil-first, ecologically informed planting design

  • Sensitive restoration of established gardens

  • Respect for historical character and planting context

  • Naturalistic perennial and grass planting

  • Seasonal structure and long-term resilience

  • Habitat creation for pollinators and wildlife

Consultancy and Stewardship

Long-term care for gardens shaped by season, ecology, and time.

Stewardship begins where design ends - through careful observation, sensitive management, and an ongoing dialogue with the land. Each landscape is guided gently toward maturity, resilience, and quiet beauty.

Forward - thinking consultancy may include seasonal visits, ecological care, planting refinement, and long-term collaboration with those who live alongside the garden.

The aim is not control, but continuity - allowing each landscape to evolve toward balance, resilience, and lasting beauty.

A garden is never finished - only cared for

From first design to careful restoration and long-term tending, each landscape is guided with patience, ecological understanding, and respect for place.
The aim is always the same:
to nurture resilience, deepen beauty, and allow the garden to settle naturally into time.

Begin a conversation

If you’re considering a garden shaped by time, ecology and quiet attention, I would be glad to hear from you.

Each project begins with a simple conversation -
listening to the place, understanding your hopes,
and allowing a clear direction to emerge.
